Description
Lower Collaton is an old traditional farmhouse dating back to the Domesday Book and before. We have retired from serious farming, but in the fields of our peaceful south facing valley are our small flock of Shetland, Jacob and Zwartble sheep, whilst chicken and ducks can be found in the yard.
The Byre is a charming and comfortable converted cowshed and hayloft, retaining all its character and its ancient exposed scissor beams, which give the living area a wonderful feeling of how it used to be.. It has been inspected and graded 4* by the A.A.There are beautiful south facing views from the upstairs living area.
The entrance lobby with slate floor leads into a hallway, off which is a spacious double bedroom with built in wardrobe and dressing table. It is en suite with its own bath (with shower attachment), bidet, basin and w.c. A twin bedded room is down the corridor, also en suite with shower, basin and w.c. This can be converted into a second double with zip and link mattresses.
Up the stairs the remainder of the Byre is open plan. The living area faces south with views of the fields and valley, and has an electric log-effect fireplace, comfy sofas and easy chairs. The kitchen is fully equipped, with eye level grill, dishwasher and separate access outside. Between the kitchen and living area is an informal eating area, with an oak dining table and chairs.
Oil fired central heating (free of charge), wood burning stove, T.V., D.V.D., microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine / tumble drier, dishwasher, carry cot, high chair and various other little gadgets. Bed linen and towels are included in the price.
Outside there is a parking area for two cars, a small lawn and a paved patio with seating. Barbeque is available for our guests. No dogs, please, but one is welcome in The Stables..
The Byre is available from May through to late September. Lettings are from Saturday to Saturday.

Historically a major naval port, particularly in Tudor times, the town of Dartmouth sits on the east side of the Dart estuary, opposite Kingswear, in the South Hams district of Devon. With a backdrop of rolling hills and beautiful view of the river upstream Dartmouth is set within a landscape which has justly been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The town itself is full of interest with narrow lanes and many historic listed buildings and shops of Elizabethan and medieval character. The famous Butterwalk, which is now the location for Dartmouth Museum, has a line of granite columns supporting the carved wooden fascias of the buildings above. Sadly, the town was struck by a fire in 2010 which damaged a number of listed buildings in Fairfax Place and Higher Street.
Dartmouth’s naval origins are evident to this day in the college which sits above the outskirts of the town at which all of the Royal Navy’s officers are trained. The town has proved popular with some famous residents over the years including Agatha Christie who had a house along the river bank (which any good river cruise will surely point out!) and Flora Thompson, the author of Lark Rise to Candleford.
Transport is well catered for, with bus and road access, as well as a heritage steam railway which brings in many vistors from Paington to the estuary station across the river at Kingswear. Several regular ferrys operate across the river to transport visitors to and from Dartmouth itself. With a good range of restaurants and holiday accommodation, including many cottages searchable on Go2, Dartmouth has a lot to offer and is an essential visit on any south Devon holiday.
